Planting the Right Tree in the Right Spot
A lot of the work we do in Republic's newer subdivisions traces back to one decision made years earlier: where a tree went in. A maple planted three feet off the corner of the house looks fine for the first ten years. Then the limbs are in the gutter, the roots are under the driveway, and the only fix left is a big trim every couple of years or taking it out.
Before you plant, think about how big the tree will be in twenty-five years rather than how big it is in the pot. A few rules of thumb we give homeowners:
- Small trees (redbud, dogwood, Japanese maple and others that stay under about 25 feet): at least 10 to 15 feet from the house.
- Large shade trees (oaks, maples, sycamores): 20 feet or more from the house, farther on the side storms usually blow in from, and well away from the driveway and the sewer line.
- Overhead lines: only small trees under them. Anything that will top 25 feet belongs somewhere else.
- Bradford pears: skip them. They grow fast, split apart in wind and ice, and we take a lot of them out, in Republic and everywhere else we work.
If a tree is already too close, it doesn't always have to go. Raising and thinning it, or pruning it back off the roof, can buy years. Our certified arborist can tell you which ones are worth keeping and which ones are going to keep costing you.
“Expertly done large two tree removal at fence line. They used professional equipment to take trees down in pieces, so no damage to yard or fence. They left the site spotless and willingly left firewood I asked for and even stacked it! I would highly recommend Trufast Tree Service.”
Glad to be close by
Trufast is based in Springfield, about twenty-five minutes from Republic. Republic is one of the 17 southwest Missouri communities we cover, and it's a town that has grown fast without losing its hometown feel. That's a big part of why we like working here.
We’re a family-owned company that has been in the tree services industry in Missouri for years, which allows us to offer one of the most comprehensive tree and yard care services for homeowners and landlords. Whether you’re talking Oak, Maple, Black Walnut, or Ash (or in too many instances: Bradford Pear), here at Trufast Tree, we know our trees.

Republic has added thousands of new residents over the last decade, but it hasn't lost track of where it came from. A bit more about the area below.
Growing fast
Republic grew by about a quarter between 2010 and 2020 and has kept climbing since, passing 21,000 people. It's now the second-largest city in Greene County. When Amazon opened its fulfillment center in Republic in 2021, it brought well over a thousand jobs, and a big demand for new housing came with them.
Near Wilson's Creek National Battlefield
Just outside town is Wilson's Creek National Battlefield, where the first major Civil War battle west of the Mississippi was fought in August 1861. The park protects more than 2,400 acres of that ground, with a five-mile tour road and the 1852 Ray House, and there's no entrance fee. From time to time, they have reenactments there, and especially on major anniversaries of the battle, these reenactments are incredible to behold.

Pumpkin Daze
Republic holds onto its small-town traditions too. Every fall since 1992, the town has thrown Pumpkin Daze at J.R. Martin Park. It started as a contest to see who could grow the biggest pumpkin, and winners have topped 1,200 pounds. Hundreds of craft and food vendors set up around the weigh-off, which makes it a must-attend for anyone in the area looking for a good time.
Twenty-five minutes from home
Republic is about 25 minutes from our main Springfield location. While it is on the outer edge of our core service area, it is still home territory for us, and we regularly serve customers all over Republic.
Trees on brand-new lots
A lot of Republic's newest homes came with a young tree or two the developer planted to improve curb appeal. The first few years have a lot of influence on how that tree grows up. A little structural pruning in those years, picking one strong leader and removing crossing branches, is quickly done and makes it far more likely the tree will grow tall and beautiful. Fixing the same problems on a 30-foot tree later is sometimes impossible, and certainly more expensive and risky for the tree. Check the young tree for stakes and ties, too. Builders often leave them on, and the wire can cut into the trunk as it grows, effectively girdling it.
When the builder saved the big tree
Preserving mature trees when building on a new lot is a good plan if you can pull it off, but construction is hard on trees. Heavy equipment packs the soil over the roots and smothers them to one degree or another. A utility trench cut too close to a tree will damage or destroy the roots on that side. We've seen a tall oak next to a brand-new home look healthy right up until the project was finished, and then all its leaves died. Sometimes one side of a tree dies off while the other side looks perfectly healthy. The damage doesn't always show right away, either. Compacted roots can decline slowly over the next few years. If your home was recently built next to an older tree, it's worth having our arborist take a look.
What goes into an estimate
All estimates are in-person and on-site because it has shown over the years to be so very difficult to make sure we are in agreement about what it is to do without walking through the property and talking with our customers. In that walkthrough, we will be listing how many trees there are that need some sort of service, whether trimming or removal, and how many obstacles we have to work around, like power lines or fencing. The size of the tree, how much we're doing to every tree, how much wood has to be removed, and how difficult it is to move the brush and wood out of the property all play a part in the ultimate estimate.
